JOHANNESBURG BOTANICAL GARDENS
The Johannesburg Botanic Garden is also one of the youngest gardens in the country at only just over 30 years of age. It was voted the best passive recreation space in the city by its residents in 2004 that make use of the greenery to escape the drudgery of city living, and is involved in a seed exchange programme with another 300 odd gardens throughout the world.
CONSTITUTION HILL
There is perhaps no other site of incarceration in South Africa that imprisoned the sheer number of world-renowned men and women as those held within the walls of Constitution Hill’s Old Fort, Women's Jail and Number Four. Nelson Mandela. Mahatma Gandhi. Joe Slovo. Albertina Sisulu. Winnie Madikizela-Mandela. Fatima Meer. They all served time here, but the precinct also confined tens of thousands of ordinary people during its 100-year history. They were men and women of all races, creeds, ages and political agendas; children too, the everyman and the elite. In this way, the history of every South African lives here.
APARTHEID MUSEUM
The Apartheid Museum opened in 2001 and is acknowledged as the pre-eminent museum in the world dealing with 20th century South Africa, at the heart of which is the apartheid story. The Apartheid Museum, the first of its kind, illustrates the rise and fall of apartheid. An architectural consortium, comprising several leading architectural firms, conceptualised the design of the building on a seven-hectare stand. The museum is a superb example of design, space and landscape offering the international community a unique South African experience.

DELTA PARK
The park itself includes the Florence Bloom Bird Sanctuary, a 7.5 hectare sanctuary that is also the oldest bird sanctuary in the city, even if it did become a little rundown and neglected. But a recent injection of cash allowed refencing, the building of two hides and a programme to deal with invasive vegetation. You can see up to 250 species of bird right in the middle of the city here, including a number of water birds, the odd kingfisher (if you're really quiet), bishops, weavers, and owls.
ANGLO BOER WAR MEMORIAL
One of the most significant events in the history of South Africa was the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902. Although the protagonists were Britain and the two Boer Republics of the Transvaal and the Orange Free State, the population of South Africa as a whole became embroiled in the war either directly or indirectly.
